My son Marish,

Love. How are you all ? - you and your friends and all the aunts ( teachers ). I am all right now. Sankho Da has become the chairman of Lalit Kala Akademi. Do you know, a newspaper reported that the last official paper which Mrs. Gandhi signed on the previous night in her office was regarding the appointment of Sankho Da as the chairman of Lalit Kala Akademi.

Two very good exhibitions are on, these days in New Delhi. One is from Dresden Museum in Germany and has works of well known and world famous artists. The second exhibition is of ceramics and laces from West Germany. Do you know, the tradition of ceramics especially the porcelain is the oldest in China and Japan. There porcelain utensils, great works of art in porcelain which became famous all over the world were created there. The art of porcelain has spread all over the world from China. This is why we call all the utensils made with white clay as ‘Chini ke Bartan’ . Porcelain utensils are baked in furnace upto the temperatures between 1300 C - 1800 C. The ceramics utensils which we make and are baked upto the temperature 1100 C - 1280 C are called stoneware. Red clay utensils like ghara, surahi and the toys are baked only between 400 C to 1000 C. If we try to bake the red clay at the temperature of 1100 C it will disintegrate and become ash.

Ceramics is a very old form of art. All over the world from the old civilisations, works in red clay are available to be seen. If we keep and preserve red clay utensils and toys , these can remain in good condition for more than 5000 years. Do you remember we saw sculptures in clay, in stucco and in stone at the museum in Texila. If you like what I have written to you, I will tell you about stucco in my next letter.

Your Ma
Study a lot, my love.
